1. Who we are
Global Human Library is a platform that preserves lived human experiences as open learning resources—through programmes such as Human Expressions, Human Circles, Human Conversations, and Human Talks.
For privacy questions, contact us using the details below.
2. Scope
This policy covers personal information processed through globalhumanlibrary.org (including www), related pages, forms, member accounts, contribution submissions, activity participation, and related communications.
It does not cover third-party websites or services we link to (for example social platforms). Those services have their own privacy practices.
3. Information we collect
We collect information you provide directly, information created when you use the site, and limited information from service providers that help us run the platform.
- Account details: name or display name, email address, password (stored securely by our authentication provider), and optional profile details such as country, photo, or phone number when you choose to share them.
- Sign-in with Google: basic profile information your Google account shares with us (typically name, email, and profile image).
- Contributions: titles, captions, written text, images, audio, video, YouTube links, and other materials you submit to Human Expressions or related activities, plus metadata needed for review and presentation.
- Activity and guardian details: when an activity requires parent/guardian consent, we may collect guardian name, email, phone, and consent confirmation.
- Applications and contact forms: name, email, WhatsApp number, participation interest, messages, and related fields you submit.
- Suggestions and feedback: ideas or comments you send through on-site forms.
- Technical and usage data: pages visited, approximate timestamps, session identifiers used for site analytics, device/browser information, and security signals needed to protect the service.
- Communications: emails or messages you send us, and records needed to respond.
4. How we use information
We use personal information to:
- Provide, secure, and improve the website, accounts, and programmes.
- Review, moderate, approve, reject, or present contributions and activity submissions.
- Operate Human Expressions and other category activities, including featured and archive displays.
- Contact you about your account, submissions, consent needs, or programme updates you requested.
- Process membership, volunteer, partner, and other participation requests.
- Understand how the site is used (page analytics) so we can improve content and performance.
- Detect abuse, prevent fraud, and enforce our Terms of Service.
- Comply with applicable law and respond to lawful requests.
5. Why we process information
Depending on your location and the activity, we rely on one or more of the following: your consent (for example publishing a contribution or optional profile fields); performance of a contract or steps you request (creating an account, submitting work); our legitimate interests in operating a respectful learning archive, securing the platform, and improving the site; and legal obligations where they apply.
Where we rely on consent, you may withdraw it for future processing, subject to limits described in this policy and any licence already granted for published work under our Terms.
6. Contributions and lived experiences
GHL is built on voluntary sharing of lived experience. When you submit writing, art, photography, audio, video, or mixed media, you choose what to share. Submissions are typically reviewed by administrators before public display.
Approved contributions may appear on public pages (for example Human Expressions, Contributions, activity galleries, contributor profiles, and related showcases). Please avoid including sensitive personal data about yourself or others unless you have a clear right and reason to share it.
You remain responsible for ensuring your submission does not unlawfully disclose another person’s private information. See also our Terms of Service and any activity-specific consent notes.
7. Children and guardian consent
Some activities (for example certain school or youth programmes) may require parent or guardian details and consent before a submission is accepted. When those fields are required, we use them only to verify consent and administer that activity.
If you believe a child has provided personal information without appropriate consent, contact us and we will take reasonable steps to review and address it.
8. How we share information
We do not sell your personal information. We share information only as needed to run GHL:
- Service providers: hosting, databases, authentication, email delivery, file storage, analytics infrastructure, and security tools that process data on our instructions.
- Public display: information you intend to publish (for example contributor display name, country, and approved contribution content) on the public site.
- Embedded media: if you link to YouTube or similar services, those platforms may collect data under their own policies when content is viewed.
- reCAPTCHA / Google: forms that use Google reCAPTCHA may send hardware and usage data to Google under Google’s Privacy Policy and Terms.
- Legal and safety: when required by law, or to protect the rights, safety, and integrity of users, contributors, and GHL.
9. Cookies and similar technologies
We use cookies and similar technologies that are necessary for signed-in sessions, security, and basic site operation. We also use limited visit analytics to understand which pages are used.
Your browser settings may allow you to block or delete cookies. If you block essential cookies, parts of the site (including sign-in) may not work.
10. Retention
We keep personal information only as long as needed for the purposes above: account data while your account remains active; contribution and moderation records for as long as the archive and programme require; guardian consent records for the related activity and a reasonable period afterward; analytics in aggregated or time-limited form; and longer where the law requires or disputes make retention necessary.
You may request deletion of account-linked personal data, subject to the limits in the “Your choices” section and any content already published under our Terms.
11. Security
We use administrative, technical, and organisational measures appropriate to the nature of the data—such as encrypted transport, access controls for administrators, and secure authentication providers. No online service is perfectly secure; please use a strong unique password and tell us promptly if you suspect unauthorised access to your account.
12. International processing
GHL is based in Pakistan and may use cloud providers that store or process data in other countries. Where information is transferred internationally, we take steps intended to protect it in line with this policy and available safeguards from our providers.
13. Your choices and rights
Depending on applicable law, you may have rights to access, correct, update, or delete certain personal information; to withdraw consent where processing is consent-based; and to object to or restrict certain processing.
You can update many profile details while signed in. For other requests, email info@globalhumanlibrary.org with enough detail for us to verify your identity and respond. We may decline requests that are unlawful, unduly burdensome, or that would break commitments already made for published archive content—those limits are explained in our Terms of Service.
14. Changes to this policy
We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. The “Last updated” date at the top will change when we do. Continued use of the site after an update means you accept the revised policy, except where local law requires a different approach.
